ER NURSE (Reserve Pool)

Job Description

General Objectives:

The Nurse will be responsible to provide medical care to patients / perform procedures ordered by Doctors or Nurse Supervisors of the assigned departments (ER Resuscitation, ER Observation, High Dependency Unit, Triage and Ambulance Service).

Key Responsibilities:

Initial assessment of patient: Reception, guidance of patient and accompanying person and introduction. Perform initial assessment of patients or secondary assessment for ambulance setting.

Patient care and treatment, emergency rooms and ambulance: Initiate emergency treatment measures (including resuscitation/CPR) under supervision. Perform necessary procedures (e.g. IV cannulation, NGT insertion, urinary catheterization). Administer medications and other necessary treatment and document all treatment given. Regularly review patients, repeating vital signs as needed and adjusting treatment if necessary. Request special investigations as indicated or directed (e.g. blood tests, x-rays etc.). Prepare patients for admission or transfer, completing all documentation and liaising with wards.If a patient is for discharge, provide patient education/information to relatives and necessary medication as well as advice about follow-up or additional needed investigations/procedures.

Management of materials, consumables, treatment area, including ambulance: Ensure sufficient stock of all necessary materials is available in the treatment area. Supervise the collection of material to be sterilized. Strict management of material and minor medical-surgical supplies and consumables. Contributing to proper management of stocks and renewing orders. Check that the ER is clean and disinfected, continuous tidying of the ER. Check that medical equipment in the ER is functioning properly. Regular cleaning of protective coverings on resuscitation beds. Ensure sheets are regularly changed. Ensure that contaminated waste (including needles and other sharps) is segregated and managed.

Reporting and networking: Ensure information is handed over to the next nursing shift. Communicate regularly with nurse supervisor, and ER doctor about patient status and treatment. Liaise regularly about patient treatment and provide feedback about problems in this regard.

Service Assessment and Development: Taking part in and contributing to trainings and internal evaluations and making an ongoing effort to maintain and update medical knowledge and skills.
