Pediatrics Specialist Doctor

Job Description

Main purpose

To ensure quality medical care for all pediatric and neonatology in-patients and patients in ambulatory therapeutic feeding center (preventative and curative), according to adapted and updated medical knowledge, MSF protocols, values and universal hygiene standards; in multidisciplinary collaboration with expat team, other medical doctors and paramedical staff; oversee admission, treatment and discharge planning, from neonates to children 12 years of age.

To train, coach and supervise the medical doctors and pediatric nurses using MSF protocols & guidelines.

To empower the medical doctors and pediatric nurse supervisor in order to ensure continuity of care and to ensure transfer of skills and knowledge to junior colleagues in order to improve their skills and quality of work

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care:

Take complete history, perform appropriate examination, diagnose and treat patients according to MSF guidelines and protocols.

Appropriate & timely management of paediatric/neonatal patients.

Appropriate & timely intervention in stabilizing critically ill patients and facilitating their transfer or referral when necessary.

Regular ward rounds for admitted paediatric/ neonatal patients as per roster in collaboration with medical team and if/when needed or requested.

Responsible for the care of the inpatient therapeutic feeding patients and consultation for the patients in the ambulatory therapeutic feeding program.

Appropriate triaging of patients and continuous prioritizing of workload.

Ensure no action or omission on his/her part places the patient at risk, including referring to others when she has reached the limit of his/her experience. Further to this she/he should aim to uphold good medical practice & update his/her knowledge regularly by reading and training.

Respect the rights of the patients and caretakers in his/her care to be informed before any procedure or medication is given and the right to decline care or treatment, and the right to have a female family member for support.

Ensure knowledge of up to date MSF protocols & guidelines and give input/advice where necessary regarding any possible changes or revision

Coaching and Leadership:

Supervise, coach and train MDs and multidisciplinary team.

Ensure MDs maintain patients’ safety and good quality of care.

Ensure MDs apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnose patients appropriately, ensure regular reviews of patients and ensure patients are managed according to MSF protocols. Involve pediatric nurse supervisor in review of patients when possible and appropriate.

Provide technical support to pediatric nurse supervisor and pediatric nurses.

Ensure transfer of skills and knowledge to junior MDs in the facility through ward rounds, case discussions, teaching tutorials, conducting different procedures, conducting mortality analysis meetings, using Telemedicine etc.

Ensure close collaboration with nurses’ supervisors in paeds and NICU in terms of quality nursing care of the patient, implementation of protocols and conducting procedures by the nurses.

Advise MDs in the management of difficult cases, help them to use telemedicine for complicated cases and/or advise referrals to other facilities where appropriate, after consultation with expat pediatrician.

Ensure MDs keep the patient and his/her family informed about the illness, that parents understand and have realistic expectations about treatments and outcomes (including palliative care where applicable).
