Sterilization Technician

Job Description

Main Objectives

To prepare, organize, and sterilize medical equipment and instruments according to guidelines to ensure cross infection-free medical care

Accountabilities:

To ensure a clean and safe working environment.

Decontaminate and clean instruments prior to sterilization.

Clean all instruments in the sterilization solution as directed.

To recognize all the instruments according to the diagrams provided.

Organize all the instruments for packing.

Pack all instruments sets according to the guidelines.

Label all the sets correctly with the expiry date clearly indicated.

Use the sensitive tape accordingly and appropriately.

Use the TST indicators on all packs to monitor the effectiveness of each sterilization session

To place packs into the sterilizer as instructed and operate at the correct time

Record each session and attach a TST Indicator of the same session against the recorded session

Re-label packs if need be after sterilization and put in instrument cupboard.

Deliver the instruments/packs to the departments and collect dirty ones (cleaned by the departments under normal running water) for sterilization in the sterilization room

Collect and re-sterilize expired packs and those that might have been exposed to conditions where sterility is no longer guaranteed

To maintain the sterilization room and all equipment in an organized and clean manner

To inform the MFPA of any problems with the instruments

Respond and report immediately to MCH when called for emergencies. Inform without fail the supervisor.

Adhere to MSF protocols and guidelines and be willing to receive training when needed.

Be responsible to take care of MSF equipment installed in Sterilization room and when needed make request for repair/alternative solution Follow strict medical ethics towards patients while working in the facility

Be aware and conscious of the risks of traumatic surgical accidents/accidental exposure to blood e.g. needle pricks. Follow strict universal precautions.

Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Perform other duties in special circumstances or weekend duties if needed, as deemed necessary by his/ her supervisor

Specific Code of Conduct:

Ensure no action or omission on his/her part places the patient at risk, including referring to others when he/she has reached the limit of his/her experience.

Does not accept gifts or money from his/her patients or their family for care provided.

Upholds good medical practice, updates his/her knowledge regularly by reading and training.

Promote the policies and protocols of MSF; refrain from practicing out of regular working station and organization. Should not prescribe medications outside these policies for local purchase from the bazaar.

Maintain patient confidentiality at all time and respect patients as much as possible.

Respect the rights of the Patients and caretakers in his/her care to be informed before any procedure or medication is given and the right to decline care or treatment, and the right to have a female family member for support.

Maintain and promote a good attitude and proper manner towards patients, their attendants and the medical staff.

Uphold universal precautions at all times during their practice in MSF medical facility

Requirements:

Education:

1 year paramedical certificate as OT Technician/ Assistant/Sterilization Technician

Experience:

Previous experience with MSF or in another NGO is an advantage

Languages:

Ability to speak some English, proficient in Urdu and any other relevant local language

Ability to read and write English
