Job Description
1. Scope
In pursuance of her duties, she prepares her program of static and domiciliary activities including home visiting in the villages falling in her area for at least once a week. She would have necessary visited each village one a month. It is expected that on average she would visit 70-80 expectant mothers for antenatal care, attend 10 births, perform 70-80 postnatal visits every month. Further, she would have 5-7 sessions on family planning and see 8-9 infants and school children for well baby clinic per day. All these activities by the LHV are pre -announced according to a time table worked out by the Medical Officer in charge of the PHC facility with a copy to DSU and DG.
2. Pre-natal
To keep herself informed of every expectant mother in her catchment area and maintain records of antenatal examination including HB estimation and urine analysis.
To evaluate mothers on various aspects of pregnancy and advise them on general health care including intake of balanced diet and micronutrients.
To advise mothers on preparation for delivery, choice of an attendant at delivery and signs/symptoms of the onset of labor.
To detect abnormalities during pregnancy and to arrange their referral if required.
To ensure T.T vaccination well in time.
To maintain adequate health record of expectant mothers according to the standing instruction.
3. Delivery Care
It is expected that 25% of all the deliveries ie. 13 per month taking place in her catchment area would be attended by LHV with due professional expertise and diligence.
4. Post-natal Care
She is expected to visit at least once each mother within first postnatal week I case of reported complicated delivery and within 1st month for the reminder.
To arrange immediate referral in the event of any postnatal complication.
To advise the mothers on the care of their health and that of the infant.
To advise mothers on family planning methods and child spacing.
5. Care of the New Board and Infant
To keep herself informed of all births in the area and assess each infant for growth and umbilical cord at the post-natal visit.
To ensure the registration of all births.
To supervise the health of infant and nursing mother.
To recognize any departure from normal health standard and arrange their referrals.
To ensure that all infants are vaccinated against eight communicable diseases under EPI and promote use of ORS in diarrheal diseases and advise on ARI management.
To maintain adequate health record of all the infants as per standing instructions.
6. Care of Pre-school Child
To supervise the health of child from 2 to 5 years of age by regular visiting and examination
To monitor the weight of the children in accordance with the WHO growth chart up to the age of 5 years and to fill up specially designed growth monitoring charts (children cards).
To advise the mothers for the care of the child’s health and provision of balanced diet.
